Mrs. Equilla Stephens, age 83, of Douglasville, Georgia passed away Thursday, October 8, 2020. A native of Douglasville, she was born April 6, 1937 and was a life-long resident of Douglas County. She was a loving mother and grandmama. Exemplary of the Proverbs 31 woman, she was very loving and was as sweet as she could be. Adhering to an open-door policy, she was a good cook—always willing to share, never met a stranger and would take in anyone. Mrs. Stephens’ family, the Parkers, donated the land where The Second Baptist Church on Colquitt Street is currently located. She was a founding member of The Second Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a faithful member of the ladies’ group. In her spare time, she enjoyed fishing and sewing. In the 1970s, Mrs. Stephens worked as a seamstress for the Atlanta Burial Clothing Company and would help families customize clothing. In 1998, she retired from the fabric department at Wal-Mart.
Mrs. Stephens was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 60 years, John Henry Stephens, Sr.; her parents, Doy and Blossie (Lowery) Parker; five brothers; and one sister.
Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her children; son, John Henry (Jean) Stephens, Jr. of Tampa, Florida; two daughters, Julia (Cornelius) Andrews of Stockbridge, Georgia and Constance (Edward) Williams of Douglasville, Georgia; two brothers; three sisters; nine grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Private services will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Mrs. Stephens to The Second Baptist Church, 8074 Colquitt Street, Douglasville, Georgia 30134.
