Florine Smith

Florine K. Smith was born March 3, 1941to the late Luther “Jack” and Frances J. Kemp, in Douglasville, Ga. The second of their six children, Florine was educated in the Douglas County School system, graduating from R. L. Cousins High School in 1960. After high school she attended Hoke Smith Technical School where she earned a Business Certification. She went on to begin a career in bookkeeping at Dobbins Air Force Base, the Internal Revenue Service and finally at the United States Corp of Engineers where she retired after 21 years of service.

Florine accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age while attending St. James AME Church in Douglasville, Ga. She later joined Greater Mount Olive Ministries under the leadership of Bishop Randy Parker. One of her favorite scriptures to reflect upon was “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 ESV

In 1973 Florine married the late Mr. Jesse J. Smith of Washington County, Georgia and from this union they had one son, the late Jermaine D. Smith. She was an avid gardener, an accomplished cook and a master at advanced puzzle designs. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, sewing, and traveling. “Aunt Flo” as she was affectionately known will be remembered for her quiet spirit and tenacious nature.

On Sunday, January 25th, Florine peacefully transitioned from this earthly realm to her new home in eternity surrounded by her loving family. Preceded in death by sister, Mildred Arnold she leaves to cherish her memory four siblings, Mrs. Janie M. Christian (Charlie), Mr. James L. Kemp (Bonnie), Ms. Carolyn G. Kemp, and Mr. Calvin G. Kemp (JoAnn), Daughter-in-law Danielle Smith, four grand-children: Ashley, Alexis, Jessica, and Jayda one great-grand Noah Jermaine as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, Feb 7 from 10:30 am to 11:00 am. A service to celebrate her life will be held in the chapel of Whitley Garner Funeral Home at 11:00 am followed by interment at Westview Cemetery.
