

Mrs. Mary Alice Mayfield, of Winston, GA passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at the age of 85. She was born March 6, 1929 in Douglas County, GA. Mary Alice loved to cook. She rode the bus to and from Southern Business University after making biscuits every morning. She graduated from Southern Business University in Atlanta in 1945 and retired from Greystone Power after 37 years of service. She was an active member of Cowan Mill Church, where she was instrumental in the chartering of the church in 1974. Over the years, she served in many roles including Sunday School teacher and Church Clerk. The church, originally named Kingdom Baptist Church, was built on land belonging to her mother, Minnie Pilgrim. Mary Alice, along with several other ladies, would bring food to feed those working on the construction of the church. The church presented Mary Alice the “Proverbs 31 Award” for her years of dedication. She lived across the street from her grandchildren as they grew up and waved to them as they got onto the school bus each morning.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Mayfield; her parents, Rube Monroe and Minnie Rice Pilgrim; and two brothers, Bobby Joe Pilgrim and Rube Junior Pilgrim.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Perry Walters; grandson, Joshua B. Nelson; granddaughter, Lindsay N. Mitchell and husband Whit; two great-grandsons; Jackson Mitchell and Tucker A. Mitchell; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, February 21, 2015 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be Sunday, February 22, 2015 at 3:00 PM in the Rosehaven Chapel with Reverend Josh Smith and Reverend Joshua Nelson of Cowan Mill Church officiating. Interment will follow at Rosehaven Memorial Park.
