With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Joseph Charles “Joe” O’Riordan, born October 21, 1935, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at the age of 89. He was at home in Dublin, Ohio, surrounded by family and friends in an atmosphere filled with love, laughter, stories, songs, and tears. Joe has now gone home to God and to reunite with his beloved wife of 47 years, Barbara Jean O’Riordan (née Reilly), who preceded him in death on November 21, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margaret “Peg” Murphy (Jim).
Joe’s life was a testament to faith, family, and community. He attended Central Catholic High School before continuing his education at Merrimack College. It was during this time that he met Barbara, the love of his life. The two married on October 11, 1958, beginning a partnership defined by unwavering devotion and shared purpose. They eventually settled in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, where they raised their family before relocating to Ohio later in life.
A successful businessman throughout his career, he found his greatest fulfillment working alongside Barbara at St. Francis DeSales High School in Columbus, Ohio. Together, they dedicated themselves to supporting young people making a lasting positive impact on their lives.
Proud of his Irish heritage and Boston roots, Joe embraced all things connected to the country of his ancestors and the city he loved. Whether it was cheering for Boston sports teams or sharing Irish soda bread and lobster with those close to him, he found joy in celebrating these traditions. His penchant for storytelling and shenanigans brought warmth and laughter to all who knew him. In his later years, Joe cherished the companionship of his loyal dog Murphy and treasured time spent with family.
Above all else, Joe was a devoted family man whose love for his family formed the foundation of his life. He was the proud father of six children: Michael (Gayle), Mark (Lisa), Brian (Missy), Mary Kate (Joe), Kerry (Don), and Kellie. His greatest joy came from spending time with his grandchildren—Jason; Joe (Hannah); Logan (Mallory); Collin; Molly; Celie (Carson); Maddie; Isabel; Bridget (Vince); and Travis (Sanja)—and laughing with his great-grandchildren: Babette; Fabien; Darling; and Jana. He was also a favorite uncle to many nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
Joe’s friendships were as enduring as they were meaningful—a reflection of the kind of person he was. From childhood through every stage of life, he cultivated deep connections that stood the test of time.
Joe’s family is grateful to Capital City Hospice, Gentiva Hospice, Compassionate Caregivers for all their support over the last year. The family is especially thankful for the tireless efforts of Kellie O’Riordan who provided care, love, and companionship to her father Joe for many years.
His family invites you to come share a story or two and remember The Irishman on February 23rd. There will be an open house from 1-5 pm at Tremont Club Clubhouse. 4800 Tremont Club Dr. Hilliard, OH 43026. Joe celebrated this day every year and we will carry on that tradition in their honor. There will be a Celebration Mass in the chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 6440 S.
