

Born in Albany, New York, on March 19, 1944 to Edna and Peter Rubenstein, Rich attended Albany Academy, Amherst College and New York University Law School. Rich’s time at Amherst College was transformative – along with forming lifelong friendships, he cemented his passion for learning and honed his critical thinking abilities. Rich passed his love for Amherst on to his daughter Sarah, who also attended the college.
In 1980, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to work for the firm of Schwartz, Shapiro, Kelm, and Warren, doing real estate development for many clients, including the Limited. In 1994, he joined Squire, Sanders, and Dempsy, where he continued to build a distinguished career as a real estate and corporate lawyer, earning a reputation for his integrity, insight, and unwavering dedication to his clients. Rich’s work benefited many, and his colleagues knew him as a trusted advisor and a sharp legal mind.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Rich was a man of deep passion and energy. An avid cyclist, he found freedom and joy in the activity, exploring the scenic Ohio countryside alongside a close-knit group of fellow riders.
Rich shared his life with his wife and high-school sweetheart, Deborah, a graphic artist. Their enduring partnership was a testament to love, laughter, and mutual respect.
He is also survived by his two daughters, Sarah Rubenstein, a lawyer of St. Louis, Missouri, and Abigail Rubenstein, an artist and faculty at the University of Michigan of Ann Arbor, Michigan; His cherished grandchildren Emma and Ben Dubinsky, and Paloma and Ana Jackson Rubenstein; And his sister Marcia Dunn of Fisher Island, Florida.
Richard’s presence, wisdom, and humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he loved deeply.
Details regarding a memorial service will be shared with family and friends in the coming days. Donations in Richard’s honor may be made to the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University.
