Bernard R. Jones

He served in the Air Force during WWll as a B24 pilot flying 28 missions in Europe and was a member of the Air Force Reserve until 1957. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Aquatic Biology and was one of the early biologists with the then Division of Water Pollution Control, MN Dept of Health, and later worked as a research biologist for the MN DNR. He moved on to the Federal Environmental Research Laboratory in Duluth and completed his career there as Associate Director of Research and Laboratory Operations, retiring in 1986.

Barney married the love of his life, Mary Elizabeth Marshall, in 1950. They spent 61 happy years together raising 5 children. His family was very important to him and he had great love for his children, their spouses, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, enjoying countless trips in the Boundary Waters , Quetico and Wyoming in all seasons. Another interest and source of enjoyment was music, especially opera. He shared all of these interests with his children and their families which was a great gift to us all.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Jennie Moline Jones; his father, David Jones; his brother, Richard Jones; sister Bernice (Jones) Carson and his beloved son, David.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Elizabeth; his children, Nancy (A. Daniel) Rydland, Chanhassen; Susan (Bruce) Henke, Duluth; Laurie (Gary) Anderson, St. Paul; Cathy (Terry) Smith, LaGrange, GA and daughter-in-law Mary Jones Maurer, Carlton; grandchildren, Jenny (Scott) Solomon, Sarah Rydland, Eric Jones, Dan (Diana) Jones, Annika Jones, Claire Anderson; great-grandchildren Madison Jones and Marshall David Jones.

A Memorial Service will be held at Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 4430 McCulloch Street, Duluth, MN 55804 at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 23rd.
