Helmi passed away December 6th, after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Pastor Antti and Sigrid Hakola Lepistö. She was born in Moose Lake, raised in West Duluth, and graduated from Denfeld and UMD. Married to Ray E. Hammer for 40 years, together they raised three children. Helmi was an accomplished musician and sang in many choirs, including the Järvenpää Singers.
She worked a wide variety of jobs throughout her life. Perhaps most rewarding were her jobs as an art/music educator and foster mother at the Morgan Park group home. Her talents in all types of handwork benefitted many members of the Duluth community, especially through her work with the ladies of the U.P. Church sewing circle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray and brothers, Antti and Veikko Lepistö.
Helmi is survived by her children, Sue (Charles Clover, Jr.), David (Miaki Habuka), and Mary (J. Jeffrey Zink); her four grandchildren, Hazel, Julian, Annika, and Freya; her sister, Aino Maria Husen; and an extended family of foster children.
