

She was born September 13, 1919 in Pierz, Minn., to Hubert and Julia (Gross) Virnig. On September 13, 1938 Mildred married Alex Hoffman. Mildred was a loving homemaker most of her adult life but did do sewing for the Ruhnke Clothing Store. An important part of her life was her family, taking care of grandchildren, baking with them and taking them on outings. Mildred will always be remembered for her strawberry jam, apricot-pineapple jam, home- made raisin bread and gingersnap cookies. She was a longtime member of the National Society of Foresters and the Legion of Mary Auxiliary at St. Rose Catholic Church, in Proctor, MN.
Mildred was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Alex in 2005; a son, Roger and daughter, Sharon; her parents; three sisters, Esther Schlegel, Florence Nagel and Cora Gruber.
She is survived by her five sons, William “Dale” (Shirlene), of Irving, TX, Rev. Fr. Dennis H. Hoffman, of Nashwauk, MN, Ken Hoffman, of Wrenshall, MN, Daniel “Dan” P. (Kathleen), of Rush City, MN and Alex D. Hoffman, of Proctor, MN; three daughters, Judy Hoffman, of Proctor, MN, Diane Hoffman, of Proctor, MN and Sheila M. Hughes, of Wyoming, MN; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and her sister, Louene Walz, of Pierz, MN; and numerous other relatives and friends.
The family would like to thank the staffs at Spirit Valley Assisted Living and St. ELigius Health Care Center for the loving care given to their mom during her time with them. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. James Building Fund or a hospice association of the donor’s choice.
Visitation Thursday, December 9th from 5:00pm until the 6:30pm wake prayers in the Bell Brothers Funeral Chapel and from 10:00am until the 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial Friday, December 10th in St. James’s Catholic Church.
