Gertrud "Trudi" Owen

31 May , 19307 July , 2018

It is with Heavy Hearts and tears in our eyes we announce that on July 7th, 2018 at 3:09 pm surrounded by family, our beloved mother Gertrud (Trudi) Owen decided to unfurl her angel wings and fly off to join her departed husband Peter (2006), who was no doubt in a meeting somewhere in heaven.

Mom was generous, kind, gracious, diplomatic, with the utmost patience which served her well in life, particularly when dealing with her two younger sons. Trudi was born and raised in Bern, Switzerland May 31, 1930, she moved to England at the age of 19 to learn English and work as an au pair girl that would be Nanny in English. Married Peter and moved to BC in 1953. Son Robert (Marlene) was born a year later, followed by Linda (Nick) in 1955, Dave (Diane) in 1956, last and we are certain a mistake Paul (Dana) in 1960. Settled in Mill Bay, after roughly five years in Dawson Creek. After all the kids had finished school and left the house or had been kicked out, Mom went back to school and earned a degree as a dental assistant, and worked in that field until retirement. Among the many hobbies from gardening, to needle point, mom’s favourite was quilting. Each of us and the grandchildren all received signed quilts. After 9/11, Trudi made a quilt of the New York Skyline and delivered it to one of the fire stations.

Unfortunately the last few years were not kind to Mom. Signs of dementia showed up about five years ago when she moved to Sherwood House in Duncan. Despite fabulous and very caring staff, mom became too much for them. We eventually found a place for Trudi in Sun Ridge Place, also in Duncan. We cannot put into words our appreciation and respect for the care aids working with Mom. They showed so much love, were gentle and very patient. It was very reassuring to know Mom was well taken care of. There will be a Graveside Service on Aug 4th, 2018 at 1:00 pm. St John’s Anglican Church 3295 Cobble Hill Road. Everyone is welcome, there will be food and drinks after the service.

Shirley and I knew Peter and Trudi through our association with St John the Baptist Anglican Church in Cobble Hill for about 16 years. Peter was the consummate teacher and very vibrant and outspoken whereas Trudi was calm, introspective, genuine and equally vibrant in her own way. Both were much loved by the St John's 'Family'. At some point in our journeys we all return home to the Lord. Peter and Trudi loved the Lord and so, in our own ways we all hope for a new Life with the Lord--when the time comes. Both Peter and Trudi were a Blessing to all of us. We were honoured to know them. Blessing to their families.

We were very sorry to find the obituary for Trudi in the local paper. We have shared many happy times over the years with Peter and Trudi. Trudi was also a beloved quilting friend in my home group for many years. We miss her. Sadly, we will be away on the day of her service. Our heartfelt condolences to all of the family.

To the Owen family,
Your mother was very kind to me and I will always remember Trudi for her kindness. You were so lucky to have her in your life for so long.
I will have her keep her my thoughts on August 4 .
