James William "Jim" Kraus, age 90, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2025, in Duncan, British Columbia with his children by his side. Born on November 15, 1934, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Jim led a life defined by dedication to his work, a love of craftsmanship, and a generous spirit.
After completing high school, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway and later earned his power engineering certification. His career took him into the oil and gas industry working in Moosejaw and Uranium City, SK before moving to Lloydminster and Devon Alberta where he transitioned to work with the Government of Alberta. He retired a few years after transferring to Calgary, AB and his passion for history and hands-on work eventually brought him to Heritage Park Historical Village in Calgary, where he continued to apply his skills in meaningful ways.
A man of many talents and interests, Jim’s life was rich with hobbies that showcased his creativity and athleticism. As a teenager, he attended youth Naval Cadet Training on Vancouver Island where he discovered a lifelong love of sailing. In the 1960’s, he built a 16-foot wooden/fibreglass sailboat from scratch, including the mast, keel, rudder, as well as sewing the sails by hand with help from his beloved wife Darlene. Many gratifying hours were spent sailing with family and friends on the lakes in western Canada.
Jim’s craftsmanship extended to building two family homes: one in Devon, Alberta in the 1970s and another in Columere Park, British Columbia in the 1990s. His talents extended to the uncanny ability to fix just about anything—from household appliances to amusement park rides.
Later in life, Jim combined two of his great interests—golf and craftsmanship—by founding a business focused on repairing and crafting custom-fitted golf clubs. This endeavour reflected both his technical expertise and his enduring enthusiasm for creating with purpose. Always active, he was still golfing while walking the course two to three times a week until his fall earlier this year.
Jim’s hobbies were as varied as they were fulfilling. He enjoyed golfing, sailing, painting, archery, hunting, and making fudge. Known for his industrious nature, he was always building something new or lending a helping hand. Volunteering came naturally to him; he gave freely of his time to causes close to his heart - volunteer fire departments, town councilman, police commissioner, Lions club and golf courses. Those who knew Jim will remember him as proud and active with a sharp sense of humour that could brighten any room.
He was a devoted husband to his late wife Darlene and took great pride in being a father. Jim is lovingly remembered by his children Mark, Kathie, Steven, and Michael (Kathleen); grandchildren Jessica (Jonathan) and Benjamin (Mark & Barb); Cydney, and Samantha (Michael & Kathleen); and great-grandchildren Hadley, Jaxon, Troy, and Lincoln (Jessica and Jonathan). Some of his greatest joy came from spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Named Gunk by his great-granddaughter Hadley, he was lovingly referred to as Gunk by all his great grandchildren.
Jim shared close bonds with his six brothers throughout his life. He was predeceased by his wife Darlene; daughter-in-law Barbara (Mark); parents Godfrey and Helen; brothers Alvin (Lil), Hank, and Greg along with other cherished family members. He is survived by Allan (Lil), Bob, and Larry (Faye) and their extended families.
No formal memorial service will be held. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Jim’s name to the Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre. Memories for the family can be added below.
We love you Dad, Grandpa, Gunk and already miss you greatly. You are forever in our hearts and memories.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
