Maurice Richardson

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Sylvia; his children, Wendy (Dave) and Cathy; his grandchildren Carley (Tom), Katie (Marcus), Emily, Liam and Nathan; his great-grandchildren Callum and Penelope; his siblings Gerald (Ruth) and Lorna and their children; extended family; and good friends.

On March 1, 1940, Maurice was born in Pouce Coupe, BC to Daisy and Howard Richardson. He played hockey, drove the Alaska Highway for work, became a voracious reader, and developed an interest in nature, particularly birds. His favourite bird song was the winter wren.

In 1964, he graduated from the University of Victoria. Until his retirement in 1998, he worked as a teacher and a principal in the Cowichan School District at Koksilah, Tansor, Maple Bay, Chemainus, Penelakut, Discovery, and Elsie Miles.

In his retirement scrapbook, his students described him as kind, considerate, cheerful, happy, and joyful. They said that he listened to them, that he was there when they needed him, and that he was almost always smiling.

In 1973, Maurice built a house for his family in Maple Bay, providing a lifetime of memories with family and friends in a beautiful setting.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, care-aids, and health care professionals at the Cowichan District Hospital for the calm, kind, and compassionate care that they provided Maurice and our family and for appreciating his smile.

The family would also like to express their warm appreciation for the love and support given at this time and would like to share that a service will not be held.

Maurice’s encouragement, kindness, positive outlook, patient nature, and unconditional love will continue as a strong foundation for his family.
