Phyllis Armstrong was born in Red Deer, Alberta. She spent her early years on a farm and then moved with her family to Chilliwack, BC. There she met her future husband, Gary Armstrong. They married and had 65 loving years together living out the vows they had made so many years earlier.
Together they had three children, Denise Armstrong (Jim White), Colleen Murrell (Steve) and Melody Hays. Mom's legacy included three grandchildren, Richard Armitage, Robyn Hays and Jeremy Hays as well as three great grandchildren, Hayden, Kaitlin and Addison. Mom was also survived by her siblings, Sandy, David, Betty and Janet.
Mom was a woman to be greatly admired. Even with three young children, she went off to university and became a teacher. Later on, when Dad's career resulted in a move she started a second profession in the insurance field.
Mom was physically active all her life; played in a racquetball league, cross-country skied and she loved to run! Mom ran at least one marathon, several half marathons and thought nothing of running 10 K on the weekend. In later years she took up walking and was renowned everywhere she lived for the distances she covered.
Mom and Dad both loved to travel and they travelled extensively in Europe when Dad was stationed in Germany. Later in their lives they went on trips around the world taking in numerous countries with friends and family.
Mom was also active in her church and community. She followed in her father's footsteps and was involved with the Rotary, even taking on a stint as president of her local club. Mom was always quick to volunteer and stepped up whenever needed or asked. Throughout her life, she was a good example to us all.
Mom truly was a wonderful mother as well as being our friend and role model. Her smile was contagious and lit up every room she was in. We loved her and will miss her very much. Mom was predeceased by both her parents and by her beloved husband Gary.
