

August 27,1921 – June 15, 2011
“Roly” passed peacefully on June 15 in his 90th year at Duncan,BC. Predeceased by his wife Charlotte, he is survived by his sister Geraldine Cavers and many nieces and nephews. Roly was born in Winnipeg, one of six children. He joined the RCNVR in 1941 and fought in the Battle of the Atlantic, commanding HMS Roydur and later survived the torpedoing of HMCS Magog. After the war he joined the merchant marine and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander in the RCN(R). In 1947, he was decorated by the Royal Canadian Humane Society for saving drowning men at Haddington Island BC. Roly pursued business ashore and afloat until retiring to Duncan in 1973. Since then he built his Maple Bay house and enjoyed long sea cruises, wood working and wine making. His garden was and is always a delight. A perfect gentleman and adventurous spirit he will be missed by all those who knew him.
Memorial Service will take place on Thursday June 23 at 2:00PM at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 5800 Church Road, Duncan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust, HMCS Sackville.
