Dave Fui-Pen Soong was born in Lianhua, Jiangxi, China. He was the eldest of four sons. During the Communist takeover of China, he fled to Taiwan, where he worked as a civil engineer and met and married his wife, Sunny. In the 1960s, he took an engineering assignment in the Kingdom of Libya and eventually, with his wife, two sons, and daughter, immigrated to the U.S. The family settled in Virginia. In 2013, he and his wife moved to Texas, to be closer to their adult children. Dave is preceded in death by two of his brothers and his son William. He is survived by his wife, Sunny Soong of Dallas, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Chase & Dixie Soong of Monroe, Louisiana; and daughter and son-in-law, Janet & Matt Dawson of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren Jessica Dawson, Rachel Soong, Valerie Dawson, and Andrew Soong; and sister-in-law, youngest brother and family, cousins, nieces, and nephews in countries on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
