John E. Hayden, owner of an electrical equipment manufacturing business, died Nov. 10 at his East Amherst home after a long illness. He was 74.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Hayden grew up in Erie, Pa., where he attended McDowell High School and participated in the American Legion’s Boys Nation in Washington, D.C.
He was an alumnus of Princeton University.
Mr. Hayden was a district manager and marketing manager for a major electrical equipment company.
He then set up his own companies – Hayden Switchgear Products Corp. and Hayden Electrical Systems Inc. – manufacturing medium voltage switching equipment and selling products for other electrical equipment manufacturers.
Many industrial firms and colleges in Buffalo and the Northeast utilize Hayden products in receiving and distributing power.
He was a member and past president of the Leica Historical Society and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He enjoyed photography and was a sports car enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Susan; two sons, James G. and Matthew J.; a step-daughter, Greta Kettle; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, 8760 Transit Road, East Amherst.
