Paul F. Gawrys, a retired research chemist for Durez/Oxychem in North Tonawanda, volunteer and churchman, died Thursday in his Amherst home. He was 80.
Born in North Tonawanda, Mr. Gawrys was a graduate of North Tonawanda High School and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from the University of Buffalo.
He worked at Durez for more than 30 years, retiring in the early 1990s.
Stricken with polio when he was 3 years old, Mr. Gawrys tried unsuccessfully to enlist in the Navy during the Korean War years, according to a daughter, Karen Hamm, who said her father suffered post-polio symptoms in later years.
He was a volunteer driver of more than 20 years with the Food Shuttle of Western New York. An active churchman, Mr. Gawrys also volunteered in the soup kitchen of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Buffalo;
“He was just the most humble, generous man, and always wanted to help people,” his daughter added.
For more than 50 years, he was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Getzville, its Holy Name Society and enior citizens group. He also was a member of Amherst Seniors, was an American history buff and enjoyed gardening, travel and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Louise Lipinski; another daughter, Karen Hamm and Andrea Solar; three sons, Gregory, Russell and Jason; a sister, Adryana Peters; one brother, John; and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Pius X Church, 1700 North French Road, Getzville.
