I was very sorry to hear about the passing of Mrs. Smith.  I grew up in EA, and I will always remember Mrs. Smith with fondness because she was my first Girl Scout leader (I believe Margaret was in the same troop?).   Girl Scouting has been a very important part of my life; I was a Girl Scout through the 12th grade, and then was a leader for both of my daughters and am still involved as a lifetime Girl Scout.  And I have Mrs. Smith to thank for that!  Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss; I hope you are able to draw some comfort from the knowledge that she had such a positive influence on so many women.

Mrs. Smith (Connie) was a surrogate mother, teacher and leader to me. She influenced my thoughts while I was growing in a manner for which I will always be grateful.  As a neighbor, she comforted me in the time of my grand-father's death.  I can still feel the warm and caring way she helped me to understand the passing of a loved one. ( I was only 8 at the time).  She extended kindness to me on several occasions. I remember that each time I went over to “Margaret's House” I came away with some kernel of precious knowledge that I didn't have before. I cherished making cookies; using exotic ingredients such as figs and dates (foods I had never tasted before).  As a girl scout I learned how to make a fire, sew, identify birds and flowers, etc.; but what is most important to know is that I learned these skills because Connie was a fabulous teacher. She taught me how to be an independent thinker and gave me the confidence to dream of great things.  I thank Margaret, Alan and Howard for sharing their mother with me.  She remains in my hands, heart and mind.
