

Anne (Schaeffer) McWalter, of East Hartford, passed away on November 20, 2016. She was the wife of the late James J. McWalter. She was born on September 25, 1917 in Hartford, to the late Mary (Drost) Zadorozny and Frank Schaeffer and step-daughter to the late Gregory Zadorozny.
She was raised in Rockville, attended the local schools and worked as a nurse’s aide at Hartford Hospital. Anne married James in October 1947, and raised their two children in Hartford. They moved to East Hartford in 1970. Anne worked for the Boys and Girls Club of America for many years and then became a travel consultant for the Globe Travel Agency of Hartford. She was fortunate to travel throughout the world, with many transatlantic crossings on the Queen Elizabeth II ocean liner. One of her most memorable trips was to Ireland with her grandson Jonathan, where they enjoyed the scenery of the countryside, learned about Irish heritage, and visited the local pubs.
Anne was active in the political arena. She was a past President of the Hartford County Federation of Democratic Women’s Club, a volunteer for the Democratic Party, a 1968 Alternate Delegate for the Democratic National Convention, a Justice of the Peace, and a member of the Redevelopment Committee for the East Hartford River Front project.
IN addition to her parents & husband, she was predeceased by her cousin John Drost, Sr. with whom she grew up with and considered a brother. She is survived by her two children, James (Karen) McWalter of Vernon, Carole (Anthony) Mazzarella of Westport, her grandson Jonathan (Amanda) McWalter of Wisconsin and three great grandchildren, Jackson, Mattingly and Delaney. Also surviving Anne are her two nieces, Gail (Roger) Horan of Vernon and Janice (Michael) Richards of Manchester and by her cousin, John (LeeAnn) Drost of Vernon and many loving cousins.
The family would like to thank her home caregiver, Merlene Bookal, of the Right At Home Care Services, for her loving care.

Funeral services will be on Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 9:30am at the Benjamin J. Callahan/Newkirk & Whitney Funeral Home, 318 Burnside Ave., East Hartford, CT 06108, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:30AM, at St. Rose Church, 33 Church St., East Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
