Born on August 29, 1939, in St. Louis, Missouri, Kenneth led a life marked by curiosity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for both nature and craftsmanship. His early years were filled with athletic pursuits—he played football and other sports in high school—and his adventurous spirit only grew stronger with time.
Kenneth attended Michigan State University, where he balanced academics with an eclectic mix of jobs that reflected his wide-ranging interests. While pursuing his degree, he worked as a mechanic, ski instructor, and even as a cowboy on a nearby ranch. He later continued his studies while working at General Motors and attending classes in Flint, Michigan. His dedication culminated in earning his bachelor’s degree in 1972.
In 1965, Kenneth married Alice Louise Whiren on November 27—a partnership that would span nearly six decades. In 1969, they settled in Haslett, Michigan, where Kenneth lived for the remainder of his life. Over the years, he contributed to the community through various roles at Meridian Mall, Michigan State University, and Meijer.
Kenneth also served in the National Guard units of both Missouri and Montana. His commitment to service was matched by a lifelong passion for the outdoors. He found joy and fulfillment in hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, sailing, caving, hiking, rock climbing, and gardening—activities that kept him connected to the natural world he so deeply cherished.
As time went on and physical pursuits became more challenging, Kenneth turned to artistic expression. He channeled his creativity into basket weaving, jewelry making using rocks he personally found and cut, stained glass work, and wood carving. These endeavors reflected not only his skill but also his enduring desire to create beauty from the world around him.
Kenneth is survived by his beloved wife Dr. Alice Louise Whiren; daughters Anne Janette Whiren (and her partner Tom Jensen) of Battle Creek, MI; Lyssa Gwendolyn Whiren Towl and her husband Dean C. Towl of Golden, CO; and granddaughter Mia Allyson Towl of Golden, CO. He was preceded in death by his sister Randy Saba and brother John Milton Whiren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11 am at Haslett Community Church, 1427 Haslett Road, Haslett, MI 48840. The family will gather beginning at 10 am to greet friends until the time of service.
Memorial contributions in Kenneth's honor may be made to The Nature Conservancy or Haslett Community Church—two causes that reflect Kenneth’s love for nature and community.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and inspiration to all who value a life lived with purpose and passion.
