

Born Februrary 27, 1936 in Bucaramanga, Colombia to Jorge Gomez and Marina Ortiz, Jorge passed away on Tuesday, April 18 at the age of 81. Jorge completed his medical degree at the Javeriana in Bogota. With his wife Ginette, he came to the United States to fulfill his dream of becoming a surgeon. He served in the military in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and surgeon both here in this country and in the Philippines. After his service, he worked as a general surgeon then as a reconstructive plastic surgeon specializing in hand surgery after completing a fellowship at the University of Michigan. Jorge and Ginette enjoyed traveling all over the world. With their three daughters, they eventually settled in Okemos Michigan. After retirement, he continued his passions of riding horses, building model ships, creating glass art, collecting coins and stamps from all over the world and attending to his wonderful garden. His dog Cloud was a great companion in his final years.
Jorge is survived by his three daughters: Diana (Tarek Hassan) and their 4 children Alex, Adriana, Nadina and Omar, Ginette (Steven Vreeken) and her son Paulo, and Ana Maria (Dan Murphy) and their 4 children Madeline, Max, Colin and Sean. He is also survived by his sister, Angela de Latorre. His death was preceded by his wife, Ginette Gomez on April 25, 2012.
A Funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 22, at 10:00 am at St. Martha Parish, 1100 W. Grand River Ave., Okemos, with the Rev. Jonathan Wehrle officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. The Rite of Committal will be held at St Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Lansing immediately after the service.
