Ken was born in Detroit on the feast of the Transfiguration, August 6, 1952, to Frank Anthony Darga and Stella Theresa (Kubit). He graduated with highest honors from University of Detroit High School and from Boston College with a degree in Psychology. He went on to earn graduate degrees in Economics and Sociology from the University of Michigan. Afterwards he worked as a health economist for the State of Michigan for 12 years before his 25 year career as state demographer during which he published two books analyzing and suggesting improvements for the United States census.
Counting was his profession; and in his personal life he was a man who counted. He served on the parish council at Resurrection Catholic Church. He was among the servant-leaders of the Work of Christ Ecumenical Community. He chaired as president for the Democrats for Life local Michigan chapter. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. With his wife Sandy (Fedewa) he encouraged, counseled, and mentored many people in the Lansing area and beyond.
Often quiet, Ken was a keen listener and even those who knew him were often surprised by his sharp wit and dry sense of humor. He enjoyed reading books and would spend time on home improvement, gardening and building a trailer for his boat. He approached his projects with a mathematician’s exactness and the results reflected it.
Ken met his wife Sandy on April 13th 1984 and they married exactly one year later, celebrating 37 years of marriage to the day. Though his physical heart failed, Ken’s spiritual heart was mighty. His family surrounded him with love in his final days. Hoping in God while missing Ken deeply are his wife, Sandy; sons, Michael and Matthew (Elizabeth Maierhauser); grandchildren, Lucy, Adelaide and Jude; sister, Kathleen (Les) Miller; nephew, Nathan Miller; and niece, Kel (Matthew) Szydagis.
