East Lansing, Michigan
Lottie Slabaugh passed away September 27 at the age of 95. Missing her guidance and wisdom are her daughter, DeAnn (Bryan) Parker; son and daughter-in-law Don and Denise Slabaugh; grandson Matthew Parker and granddaughter Danielle Slabaugh. Lottie was a farm girl from Idaho. She was the only one of 8 siblings to advance her education beyond high school. Her father sold a cow! to fund her trip across country to Chicago, where she enrolled in nurses training at the Bethany and Cook County Hospitals. While in school, she met Paul Slabaugh, a young Chicagoan who lived close to Bethany. After marriage, Paul and Lottie lived throughout the Midwest as Paul was transferred in his job. They spent the last 17 years of Paul’s career in a small town in North Dakota, where Lottie gave up nursing to become a full-time Mom. At Paul’s retirement in 1973, the family moved to Cheboygan, MI, to manage Paul’s cherished forest land. Shortly after Paul’s death in 1980, Lottie moved to the Lansing area to be near her family (and a new granddaughter). Lottie was active in the PTA, as a Girl Scout leader and as a Red Cross volunteer. She was also, with her husband, an avid rock hound and “Tiger Beetle” collector. In later life, she enjoyed collecting carnival glass and her membership in the Lansing Carnival Glass Club.
The family will hold a private memorial at Glen Oak Cemetery in suburban Chicago, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved Paul. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, P.O. Box 30480, 1210 W. Saginaw Street, Lansing, MI 48909-9986 in Mrs. Slabaugh’s memory.
The family is being served by the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, East Chapel.
