Born on June 29, 1932 , in Detroit, Michigan, Norm lived a life defined by devotion to family, his Catholic faith and kindness to others. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who enriched the lives of all who knew him. No one was a stranger to Norm for long – his warmth, humor, and genuine interest in others made everyone feel valued and welcome.
Norm attended St. John Berchmans Catholic School and Cass Technical High School in Detroit. He went on to complete Architectural Drafting studies at the University of Detroit. Norm built a long and respected career in architectural drafting, working for a number of firms, including Argonaut, the engineering arm of General Motors.
Throughout his career, he contributed to numerous notable projects, including the GM Hamtramck “Poletown” plant, the GM Dayton plant, the ceilings of Fairlane Mall in Dearborn, many residential homes in Grosse Pointe, and even his daughter and son-in-law’s vacation home at Boyne Mountain. His work reflected not only his technical skill but also his pride in building spaces where people could work, live and gather.
Norm had a passion for both playing and watching sports. He was an avid downhill skier though his life, until his mid-80’s. He also played on men’s softball teams and bowled in mixed doubles with Mary, his beloved wife of 52 years. In his early 80’s he began playing pickleball until he turned 90. He was a steadfast supporter of his daughters cheerleading, softball and skiing. By far, his greatest delight was cheering on his two grandsons at their soccer and baseball games and ski races. He was also a lifelong fan of Detroit professional sports, especially the Tigers, Lions and Red Wings.
The proud son of Belgian immigrant parents, Norm was an active member of the Belgian Businessmen’s Society and St. Charles Club during his many years in the Detroit area. In the Lansing area, he served as social director for a few years in the Burcham Hills’ Clusters community and was an unpaid “recruiter” and “ambassador” at American House in Haslett.
Norm is survived by his daughters Susan (Vincent) Benivegna of Okemos, MI, and Lori (Terry) Keisic of Campbell, CA, as well as grandsons Matthew Benivegna and Michael Benivegna of Okemos, MI, and his younger sister, Sr. Joan Houtekier, OSM of Omaha, NE. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary (nee Kortz).
A funeral Mass will be held at a later date at St. Martha Church, Okemos.
