

Paul Scott Hickner was born November 8, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa and passed away April 3, 2022 at his home in Williamston, Michigan. He was a devoted husband, loving father, and his greatest joy was being a Papa to his beloved grandchildren. Paul had a passion for organic gardening, spirituality, reading, and woodworking. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lu, their children Kathryn, Angela, and Brian (Jordan); his five grandchildren Eva, Graham, and Ella Cruz, Emily Moore (Larry Moore, father to Emily), and Nora Mae Hickner; four siblings Mark (Georgia) Hickner, Thomas (Nancy) Hickner, Stephen (Carol) Hickner, Elizabeth Hickner; extended family including David (Joyce) McFarland, Patrick (Barbara Michaels) McFarland; Michael McFarland, and Maureen McFarland; several nieces and nephews. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Lawrence P. Hickner and Eva Scott Hickner McGee; stepfather Dr. Harry B McGee; siblings Mary and John Hickner; Martin and Eleanor McFarland, Kathleen (Neil) McFarland Huskins. Paul graduated high school at Saint James in Bay City, Michigan. He attended St. John’s University and received his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Detroit. He also attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and received his MBA from Central Michigan University. Following his diagnosis of CLL, he retired from his residential real estate appraisal business and promptly enrolled in the Accelerated Student Organic Farming Program at Michigan State University. Paul was a grateful member of a 12-step program with 19 years of continuous sobriety. A memorial service will be held Friday, April 8, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing, MI 48823. The family will welcome visitors between 11:00 am and 1:30pm prior to memorial service scheduled for 1:30pm. Guests may view the 1:30pm memorial service virtually through the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes- East Lansing Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice in memory of Paul.
