Peter Crino was born December 4, 1929 in Silver Creek, NY to Benjamin and Mary Crino. He is the last survivor of 4 brothers including Sam, Benjamin, and Richard Crino who predeceased him. He attended Silver Creek High School where he played football and basketball but demonstrated early and significant talent in music and specifically, the trumpet. He studied music at Ithaca College but had to return home at age 18 to run the family grocery store business when his father passed away. Peter studied trumpet with famed trumpeter William Vacchiano and at age 19 was hired by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He married his loving wife Esther on July 16, 1955 and they moved to New York City to pursue his music career. They moved to Scarsdale, NY and then resided in Ardsley, NY in Westchester County.
Peter was a widely sought after professional trumpeter playing for more than 30 years in the Broadway Theater. He earned a Masters of Music at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He performed in a number of symphony orchestras under conductors Bruno Walter, Leopold Stokowski, and Igor Stravinsky, as well as recording studios and live performances. He has played for a multitude of well-known Broadway actors including Sir Lawrence Olivier, Robert Preston, Mary Martin, Kathryn Hepburn, Shirley Jones, and vocal performers Cab Calloway, Sammy Davis, Lena Horne, and Liza Minelli. He left the theater in the late 1970’s and became a full-time music teacher in Hastings, NY public schools, retiring in 1985. He maintained a large roster of private trumpet students. Since then, he has continued to play as a freelance musician often playing duets with his wife Esther, a talented pianist in her own right in a wide variety of venues. Peter and Esther moved to Piermont, NH where they were active in performance arts for 20 years before moving to East Lansing, MI.
Together they loved the theater, opera, and art, and their grandchildren. Peter and Esther traveled extensively visiting much of Europe, Canada, and Western United States. Peter was an avid gardener cultivating beautiful gardens in each of his homes.
Peter will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and for his amazing trumpet skills giving thousands of hours of joyful musical performance to so many.
A recent short video (below) shows him still playing the trumpet at age 95.
