In Memory and Celebration of Richard L. Schultheis
December 13, 1928 – November 15, 2014
Richard Leo Schultheis was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania to Leo Anton Schultheis and Sarah Elizabeth Schultheis, both devout Christians. After graduating from Penn State, he then prepared himself for Christian ministry. He attended Northern Baptist Theological Seminary in Chicago where he earned a Master’s Degree in New Testament and a Doctorate in Theology. During seminary he married Esther Torta and enjoyed over 27 years of marriage before she went to be with the Lord. He also earned another Master’s Degree in Religious Education at Syracuse University, while serving two churches in Binghamton and Vestal, New York. He served two long pastorates; 11 years in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania and 17 years at University Baptist Church in East Lansing, Michigan. During his pastorate at University Baptist Church, he met and married Bonnie Anderson January 1, 1990. He served as Interim Pastor in seven churches and most recently was Minister of Congregational Care at Christ Community Church, Lansing. Dr. (Rev.) Richard L. Schultheis served Baptist churches for 61 years.
He came from a florist family and loved flowers and gardening. He served on the Mental Health Board in Pennsylvania and Michigan. He was noted for his expository preaching and concern for people of all ages.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie and three children: Dr. Jonathan R. Schultheis (Nancy), Cary, NC; Joanna E. Camick (Daniel), Toledo, OH; Joy E. Schultheis (Xenia, OH); grandchildren Katharine Schultheis Mallory (William), Raleigh, NC; Sarah Schultheis (Raleigh, NC); Christina Camick (Toledo, OH) and Faith Camick (Bowling Green, OH). He is also survived by step-children; Andrea Anderson, Eric Anderson, Karla Johnson, Marc Anderson and step-grandchildren, Morgan and Myles Johnson, and Max Anderson.
The viewing will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, East Lansing, MI from 5 to 8 pm, Tuesday, November 18, 2014. There will be a private interment at Glendale Cemetery. A celebratory memorial service will be held Sunday, December 7, 2 pm at Christ Community Church, Lansing, MI with Rev. Michael Dunkelberger officiating.
