Born January 6, 1940 to Donald and Pauline Powers in St. Johns, passed away on, March 31, 2011, at the age of 71. Rita was a graduate of Rodney B. Wilson High School in St. Johns and Lansing Community College School of Nursing. She retired after 30 plus years with Sparrow Hospital. Rita was President of Lakeside Village Board of Directors for 10 years; and a member of the Lake of the Hills Board of Directors for 7 years. She attended Valley Farms Baptist Church. Rita loved life, spending time with friends and family, cooking, and most of all caring for others.
Rita was preceded in death by her sons, James, Jeffrey and Robert; her parents; sister, Peggy Weber and sister-in-law, Karen Powers and nephew, Troy Powers. She is survived by her sons, Michael (Susan) Freeman, Steven (Lillie) Freeman and David (Julie) Gwisdalla; grandchildren, Edd (Kristen) Freeman, April (Jacob) Wilkins, Lika Freeman, Gavin and Ava Gwisdalla; 4 great-grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 15 step great-grandchildren; and 2 step great-great-grandchildren; brother, Gary Powers; sister, Susan (Lynn) Ferguson and many special friends.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 4, 2011, at Noon, at Valley Farms Baptist Church, 1141 E. State Rd., Lansing, with Pastor David R. Leisman officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 3, 2-6 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing and Monday 1 hour prior to service at the church.
