Robert James Copland, age 88, of East Lansing died January 29, 2011. Robert was born on his grandparents’ farm July 20, 1922 in Cass City, MI, the son of Laurence Walker Copland and Vera (Bardwell) Copland. Surviving are his wife, Susan (Churchill) Copland; sons, Robin (Cindy) Copland and William (Elizabeth) Copland; grandchildren, Eryn Copland, Jennifer Kelley, Kathrine Kelley and Cere (Gareth) Sedden; sisters, Glenna (Fred) Brown and Doris Peck.
Robert graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit, where he met his wife Susan, the love of his life. They were married in 1945, and cherished their 65 years of marriage. Robert served as a Gunnery Instructor in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He then earned his Graduate Degree in Education from Michigan State University. He taught 4th grade, physical education, science, and social studies in the Haslett Public Schools for 30 years. He was well known for creating the outdoor education and pioneer living classes in Haslett. Robert continued to volunteer after retirement with the elementary school Stamp Club, Woldumar Nature Center and Nokomis Learning Center. He helped found both centers. Robert loved entertaining family and friends at the log cabin he and Susan hand built on Grand Island.
Memorial services will be held at Haslett Community Church, 1427 Haslett Rd, Haslett, MI on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at 11 AM, with Rev. Kurt Kirchoff officiating. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM and 1 hour prior at the church.
