Bob was born on March 7, 1927 in Lansing to William and Frieda Smith. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946. He studied architecture at University of Michigan and Michigan State University, receiving his degree from MSU in 1950. He worked in the field for over 50 years, notably in his firm Freeman, Smith and Associates. He married Jean Tibbals in 1949 and raised two children, Jennifer and Lindsey.
Bob had many interests, from sports to spirituality. He was passionate about flying, golf, movies and his beloved Spartans. He lent his voice to many local organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club (Chapter President), Civitan International, Optimist Club, East Lansing Historic Preservation Commission, Sparrow Hospital and the Downtown Coach's Club. Bob was also active in the Unity Spiritual Center of Lansing. He was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile and his kindness and compassion.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Douglas. He is survived by Jennifer and Lindsey, his four grandsons, his longtime companion Barbara Butterfield, and several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Bob's life on Saturday, October 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, East Chapel, 1730 E. Grand River Avenue in East Lansing.
