Roswell “Ros” Miller passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2016 in East Lansing. He was born August 4, 1932 in Nassau County, NY to Roswell and June (Kenfield) Miller. After graduation from the NY State Ranger School, he enlisted in the US Army. He graduated from the State College of New York at Syracuse with his Bachelor’s degree in Forestry in 1958, his Master’s degree in Forestry in 1959, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1972.
He married Ruth Stockinger, his high school sweetheart, in 1955. Together they raised three sons as they moved around the United States: first as a forester for the US Forest Service in Oregon, then as a forest engineer and surveyor in New Mexico, before joining the faculty of Michigan Technological University in the Department of Forestry and Wood Products. At MTU, he helped start the Graduate Program at the Master of Science level and began the Land Surveying option, later developed into a full curriculum. Ros participated in research studies and was published in forestry and surveying journals as well as newspapers. He also served as a consultant to state and federal departments, and was a member of the Michigan State Board of Forestry. Ros’s interests were wide-ranging, but he loved to read, sing in his church choir, listen to classical music, and be outdoors – whether on the lake, in the woods, camping, or simply spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jean Coleman. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Ruth; his three sons, David (Deanna), Wayne (Holly), and Richard; his seven grandchildren, Sarah, Catherine, Alexandra, Daniel, Michael, Morgan, and Kendahl Miller.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at 11:00am at Asbury United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Lansing Rd, Lansing, MI 48912. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In honor of Ros, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
