Shirlean Beth Hauser passed from this life to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 21, 2024, after a long battle with cancer. She was the oldest of 5 children, and was born on July 11, 1967, in Seoul, South Korea. She was adopted along with her younger sister and brother to Claude and Shirley (Koopman) Chrysler on March 25, 1975. The family lived in several locations in West Michigan during Shirlean’s young life. Shirlean attended Holland High School where she graduated in 1987. After spending a year as a nanny, Shirlean attended Michigan State University and graduated with a B.S. in Economics & Management in December of 1992. Shirlean worked for Prince Corporation in Holland, MI, and then moved to East Lansing to become the Finance Manager for Middle Cities Education Association. Shirlean’s most recent working years include accounting and tax services for several small companies in the area.
During her time at MSU, Shirlean met Gary Hauser through mutual friends. They fell in love and married on April 26, 1997, at St. Gerard Church in Lansing, MI. They began building their life together with good friends, good food, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. On April 13, 2002, Shirlean gave birth to Hannah. Then on April 12, 2006, Shirlean gave birth to Sophie. Shirlean cherished her daughters and would do anything for them. Her loyalty, tenderness, commitment, and attention to details were shown to them in every way.
Some would say Shirlean was the most resourceful person they had ever known. She was an outstanding cook, technology proficient, avid reader, creative artist, highly organized, trivia buff, devoted mom, friend and spouse, and servant of God. There wasn’t much she couldn’t do, but one of her best traits was that she would help anyone. Shirlean spent years volunteering at Junior League of Lansing, helping with countless school events at St. Thomas Parish School and Lansing Catholic HS, and being the proud “Golf Mom” of the Lansing Catholic High School Girls golf team. Shirlean had an infectious smile and personality and loved her family and friends very much.
In 2017, a tumor was discovered in Shirlean’s stomach. She endured months of chemo, radiation and a 9-hour surgery. For a couple of years, she lived with mild discomfort as she adjusted to her new lifestyle. In late 2021, another tumor was discovered in the same area, resulting in the removal of the remainder of her stomach. The recovery process was long and painful. As with all of Shirlean’s challenges, she fought with strength and grace. In the fall of 2023, the cancer metastasized into her bones. The pain became too much to endure so Shirlean chose to be at home, under hospice care, to spend her last days with the people she loved. Shirlean will be remembered for her courage and strength for many years to come.
Shirlean is survived by her loving husband of almost 27 years, Gary, and two daughters, Hannah, 21, student and golfer at Saginaw Valley State University, and Sophie, 17, student at Lansing Catholic High School and will be attending the University of Detroit Mercy in the fall to study and play golf.
