PEORIA – George McLain “Mac” Pogue, 77, of Peoria, Illinois died on November 13, 2022, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center from respiratory failure caused by ALS. His family was by his side. He was born on September 6, 1945, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to George and Jane (Bruner) Pogue.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Connie (Cress) Pogue; sons, Bart (Sarah) Pogue and Justin Pogue; half-sister, Eileen (Bob) DeWeese; two grandsons; and many other loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bruce Pogue.
Mac graduated from East Peoria Community High School in 1963 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Bradley University in 1967. Awarded a NASA Fellowship, he pursued an advanced degree in Mathematics at Kansas University. He returned to Peoria in 1969 and embarked on a 34-year career in I/T at Keystone Steel & Wire Company, Caterpillar Inc., and IBM Corporation. He was a dedicated Scout Leader with the W. D. Boyce Council, Boy Scouts of America, and proud father of two Eagle Scouts.
In retirement, he was a passionate community volunteer, learner, mentor, and tutor. Mac served as a founding board member of the Peoria Charter School Initiative which launched Quest Charter Academy. He was active in the Peoria Area World Affairs Council, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bradley University, Friends of Proctor Center, and Our Saviour’s Chapel.
Mac was well known for his optimism, curiosity, and friendliness. He always had a smile and a question ready. He was never the first to leave any gathering. He loved to play handball, listen to good music, and travel with family and friends. He deeply enjoyed living in Peoria.
Cremation has been accorded. A celebration of Mac’s life will take place at Jonah’s Seafood House in East Peoria, Illinois on Saturday, November 26, 2022, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm, including a brief ceremony at 2:00 pm. Memorials may be made in his name to Quest Charter Academy or the ALS Association.
