Mary Frances Varnell Masingill, 85, of Chattanooga passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021 at her home. Mary was a lifelong and proud Chatanoogan, born March 28, 1936, to Joseph Varnell and Martha Lawson Varnell. Mary was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church (formerly Avondale Baptist Church) her entire life and it was there she married her late husband of 57 years, legendary radio broadcaster, Luther Masingill. She graduated from Chattanooga City High school in 1954 and was employed by the State of Tennessee for many years.

Mary was a devoted wife and Luther would not have been Luther without Mary. She was a loving mother and "grandmary" and was happiest when she was able to make a difference in their lives.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther; her daughter, Joan Brown; brother, Edward (Pat) Varnell and sister, Betty Weathington.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Masingill; son-in-law, Michael Brown; grandchildren, Ian (Mary Beth) and Evan Brown; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday June 9, 2021 at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 South Moore Road, East Ridge, TN with the Rev. Todd McElyea officiating. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Tuesday June 8, 2021 at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to your local animal shelter or other favorite charity.

The Chattanooga High School Alumni Association extends it's deepest sympathy to Mary's family on her passing. She was a member of the CHS Class of 1954 and a true Dynamo for life. What a wonderful union of a Dynamo and a Purple Pounder.

I was a grammar school girl when I accompanied my parents to Avondale Baptist Church to attend the wedding of Luther Masingill to his beloved Mary. I've attended many a wedding since. I don't think a single one surpassed the joy with which that day was filled!

It might have been a day slow in coming for long-time bachelor, Luther. But the years surely showed how very worth the wait it was. And, in his unabashed love for Mary, he allowed all of Chattanooga to share in that joy, with warm-hearted on-air anecdotes of their early years as a couple to the births of son Jeff and daughter Joanie--could anything have meant more to them? Well, along can Ian and Evan to put a resounding "yes" to that query!

As a child, I was struck by the beauty and sweetness of that young bride. As the years have passed, I've always been struck by the singular contribution one good woman's focus on creating home and family, along with one good man, has enriched our entire community. Thank you, Mary Masingill, for sharing your joy with all of us.

And to her precious family, my heartfelt condolences. God bless you, each and all.
