Rabbi Daniel Franzel, 80, of East Stroudsburg, PA, passed away peacefully Friday January 27, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Marilyn (Scarpa) Franzel with whom he shared of 28 years of marriage.
Born December 17, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Morris and Ruth (Novick) Franzel.
As a boy, he was educated at Tilden High School in Brooklyn. He then graduated from Hunter College, where he had been captain of his swim team. After a year of teaching Physical Education and Math at a middle school in New York City, he changed career paths and attended Hebrew Union College in New York, where he was ordained as a Rabbi in 1966. His congregations included Temple Beth Shalom in North Miami Beach, FL, Garden City Jewish Center in Garden City, NY, Temple Israel in South Orange, NJ, and Temple Beth Am in Parsippany, NJ, where he served for 24 years. He also taught for many years in the Religious School at Temple Shalom in Succasanna, NJ. His loves included his family, Israel, the Hebrew language, Goofy, the Brooklyn Dodgers and old movies, with a special affinity for Young Frankenstein.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Marilyn, his children Erika Wynzel of Lake Hiawatha, NJ, Rabbi Ethan and Sarah Franzel of Wynnewood, PA, Cantor Jordan Franzel of Flourtown, PA, Adrienne and Jose Lopez of East Stroudsburg, PA, along with eight loving grandchildren, Emma, Mira, Isaac, Jessica, Talia, Gavin, Logan and Dylan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Religious Schools of Temple Beth Am in Parsippany, NJ and Temple Shalom in Succasanna, NJ.
