Carolyn and her husband George were married in 1960 and traveled while working across the States before settling back in Oklahoma and eventually moving back to Edmond with their three children. In 1977 George and Carolyn began working together and from that day forward they were inseparable. George served as Carolyn’s personal Chauffeur driving her to work, the store or wherever else she wanted to go. Together they proved to be very good entrepreneurs building and selling the business Decorative Concepts to buy the Edmond Quick Mart convenience store. From day one they opened the store together every weekday morning at 6:00am sharp and quickly built a loyal following of regular customers that most became true friends. Carolyn was an exceptional cook and she quickly became famous for the food she served, especially her fried chicken and chili smothered burritos. The lunch crowd became so large that they had to bring in extra help and if a vendor tried to break Carolyn’s “no deliveries during lunch hours” rule he would get such an earful he would only try to break it that one time!
While owning the Quick Mart camping and fishing became their favorite hobby. They would anxiously wait for 5:00pm Friday, often sneaking out a few minutes early, to get to their favorite camping spot at Arcadia Lake, set up camp and drop a line in the water. After several years they sold the store and semi-retired to worked part time at a campsite access gate at Fort Gibson Lake. There they got to work a little, camp for free and fish as much as they wanted. In their eyes, it was about as good as it could get.
After forty-three years of marriage, and working and playing together for the last twenty-five years, George passed away in 2002.Carolyn had tremendous love and support from her family but for the first time in decades she was without her partner. In many ways Carolyn’s incredible strength is what made her so special to everyone that knew her. Following George’s passing, and for the first time in her life, she became independent. She bought a car and, after years of being driven, had to learn to drive again, remodeled the house that she and George bought in 1973 and went back to work at Adfitech, an Edmond technology company, before finally retiring in 2005. She began traveling to places she had dreamed about all her life with her sisters and children going to Hawaii, Alaska, Spain, Yellowstone, Redwood State Park and many other places. After the traveling slowed in recent years you could often find her with her sister Wanda and friend June at one of the many Oklahoma Casinos.
In her final days Carolyn was in her home surrounded by the family she had raised there. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; brother, Leo Hampton; sister, Sonya Hampton; and grandson, Taylor Daves. She is survived by her sisters, Wanda Cantrel and Sharon Greene (Alan); brothers, Michael Hampton (Debby) and Randy Hampton (Judy); daughters, Tammy Myers and Jamie Daves (Wayne); son, Jeff Green; granddaughters, Brooke Bomberger (Andy) and Haydan Marshall (Kyle); great-great children: Logan, Kennedy, and Hadley Marshall; and many other family members and friends.
