Born and raised in Oklahoma City, she was the granddaughter of an 89er. Grace was well named. A true lady who graced her family with love, wit, intelligence, spunk, humor, compassion, perseverance and toughness.
Her husband likely fell in love with his Gracie at first sight. Their story began as he purposefully cut in front or her at the OU cafeteria as a clever ruse to talk to her. On their first date, he stole her heart with a hot fudge sundae. They may have been married earlier had he heard her “yes” response after proposing to her at a New Year’s Eve dance. They were truly a devoted and loving couple who spent 42 years together.
She understood loss too. Her husband died too young and her father, a Postal Inspector, was killed when she was at the tender age of 15. She persevered and lived a full, happy life. It was hard not to love her, as evidenced by her children and grandchildren rushing to her side as she died.
She loved her family, dogs, cats, Perry Mason, Agatha Christie, Cattlemen’s Steakhouse, PEO, bridge clubs, peanut butter, and, yes, hot fudge sundaes. Too bad there aren’t more like her around. She will be missed every day by those who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ernest Mackie and Grace B Harkins, sister Mary Josephine Norwood, husband John Wesley Light, Jr. and grandson James Collin Andrus, Jr. There was surely a joyous reunion and an ice cream party awaiting her at the gates of Heaven. She is survived by son John Ernest Light and wife Tina of Edmond, OK, daughters Dru Ann Andrus of Oklahoma City, OK and Jennifer Light McFarland and husband Jay of Derby, KS, seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Donations in Grace’s name can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Oklahoma City or the Free to Live Animal Sanctuary.
