Terry Randolph Avery, 73, of Edmond, Oklahoma, passed away suddenly on August 13th, 2023. Terry was born to Floyd and Willie Mae Avery, on April 3, 1950, in Tokyo, Japan. He traveled the world in his childhood as an army brat living in Japan, Panama, and Germany, along with several bases in the US before his family’s last stop at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City. He graduated from Carl Albert High School in 1968 and spent some time at the University of Oklahoma, majoring in fun. He spent several years in the service of his country as an Airborne Army Ranger and US Army Special Forces Green Beret. After his service, he met the love of his life, Linda Maxwell, whom he married in 1976. He spent his career working offshore and onshore drilling operations for various oil & gas companies before retiring in 2015.
His hobbies were hiking and camping with his kids, working out, watching sports and documentaries, building model military aircraft, and, of course, having Saturday breakfast at Jimmy’s Egg. He often said “I was born to retire” and he wrote the book on how to do absolutely nothing in retirement that you don’t want to do. But what he loved most was spending time with his family and friends, telling stories, watching sports, listening to loud classic rock, and turning on his “fun light”. He was always the life of the party.
Terry is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Tom, Jerry, and Robert Avery. He is survived by his loving wife Linda, his daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Chris Halstead, his son and daughter-in-law, David and Ellen Avery, and grandchildren Cecelia and Madeleine Avery, Tessa Halstead, and his sister Sandie Mercer.
An amazing husband, father, grandfather, veteran, raconteur, WWII historian, world-class complainer, and friend to every person and every animal. He will never appreciate the immense love we had for him, the impact he left on his children, and the huge void that is left behind.
Terry’s family will host a memorial service on Friday, August 18, 2023, at 10am. The service will be at Memorial Park Cemetery at the mausoleum at 13400 N Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73131. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Terry’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
