

From an early age, Ross displayed athletic ability and a passion for sports. Growing up in Wetaskiwin, he participated in many community and school sports. At university, he played hockey and football for the Golden Bears. Returning to his hometown, Ross was a teacher and multisport coach at Wetaskiwin Composite High School for 35 years. His contributions as a dedicated community leader were recognized when he was inducted into the Wetaskiwin Sports Hall of Fame. After retiring, Ross wintered in Mesa, Arizona playing golf, slow pitch, enjoying Apache Wells happy hours and socializing. Ross always enjoyed driving to and from Mesa, finding new and interesting places to see along the way. Until recently, he and Colleen travelled regularly with friends to different areas of the world and spent their annual week at Fairmont Hot Springs with family. In his later years, Ross was a dedicated spectator, cheering on younger family members at every opportunity, he continued to stay connected with family and friends on the golf course.
Ross was all about the people. He believed it is important to share your talents, time and enthusiasm to accomplish individual, team and community goals. The right attitude and work ethic ensure success. Ross made a difference through his teaching, coaching and community work. He was always grateful for his family and friends. All will miss his sense of humor and playful spirit.
Ross is survived by his wife Colleen, her sons Mike (Jocelyn) and Jim (Tracy) and their children (Jadyn and Eric) and his daughter Tara and her children Hayden, Kyra, Logan and Ryder. Also mourning are his sister Pat (Bob) Stengel, brother Roger, niece Dawn (Bruce), nephew Warren (Jen, Alex and Scott), niece Corrie (Evan and Owen) and the extended Hedemark and Mackenzie families. Ross was predeceased by his first wife Carol, son Scott, brother Stan and parents, John and Norma.
The family sincerely thanks the health care providers who supported Ross in the last part of his life at home and at the MacTaggart Residence. Despite failing health, he continued his exercise programs. An athlete to the end, he displayed his strength, resilience and determination.
Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life for family and close friends will be held later. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a Sports Central (Edmonton) or the Alzheimer’s Society of Alberta.
