He was always my favorite music teacher, he was caring amd understanding and made learning an instrument fun, he made music so much fun. RIP Mr. Herklotz

3 yrs have pasted. My fond memory is the battle of the 68 & 69 Chevy Impala's. We both were very competitive with our cars.

Mr Herklotz  was one of my favorite teachers at Austin O'Brien. I had the privilege of being taught by him in the extracurricular Stage Band and Jazz Combo, as well as his involvement with the year end musicals we would do.
I remember in Jazz Combo he asked me to do a solo for the song, "Spooky", I was so nervous and didn't want to do it as I had never done a solo before, but he encouraged me and told me that I could do it. He gave me a week or two to figure out what I wanted to do for the solo, before I had to present it in rehearsal, and shortly after, perform it for a school related event, and later a fundraiser.  Before we performed, he knew I was still really nervous about it; he looked at me and said, "You got this. When I point at you, you go." 
I'll never forget that. To this day, whenever I hear "Spooky" , I think of Mr Herklotz. He had a big impact on my love for blues and jazz, and I'll always remember how he was always laughing and joking, and how caring he was.

Andy was such a talented musician and we appreciated him sharing his talents with our group that Jack led at Annunciation and at special occasions where he would share his gifts. I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Herklotz's passing. I was one of the many students who was inspired by him.  As a junior high student at St.James school in Edmonton he was a part of some very formative years in my life. I struggled learning some subjects and am grateful for his encouragement and youthful energy. In other subjects such as music he wholeheartedly involved himself and inspired me to strive for something that moved me - music. I am a better person because of those experiences. It takes a special kind of human being to offer that to others and he was indeed someone I will never forget.  Rest easy my teacher.

Our  Deepest Sympathies to you and all the family for your loss. Working with Andy was an honour and a privilege.  I feel blessed to have known him  and so grateful to have heard him sing and play at all our school celebrations. 

We are sending our heartfelt sympathy to Tina, Lucas, and Larissa. Andrew was a talented man and a real people person. We hope that his many accomplishments in life will bring you some comfort in your enormous loss.

Andy and I met each summer for about 20 years to work on the main stage crew at the Edmonton folk festival.  Each year we would share laughs and jokes, tell each other about our jobs, our worries, and our children.  When we met again the next summer we would pick up right where we left off and do it again.  
Stage work is hard and physical and sometimes stressful with the reward of hearing great musical performances in between. We had lots of time to ' hurry up and wait' between setups to talk. When he advised young musicians to buy only things they could carry he knew what he was talking about. None of us will ever forget the time we schlepped a massive sound board up the backstage stairs. 
When the music was playing and we were all dancing back stage the smiles never stopped. Then on to the party to dance and laugh some more. 
Andy always talked fondly of building memories at the lake with his family. I hope those great memories of this fine man will stay close to your hearts.  
Andy will be missed by do many.

My favourite memory of Andy would be my wife and I serving as supervisors on the Vancouver/Vancouver Island Band Trip.....I believe the year was 1999.  We recocognized very quickly what a positive role model he was to his students....they not only liked him but he was shown much respect.  I still chuckle about some students getting caught in an elevator and how he dealt with the sticky situation!  At the band competition in Nanaimo is where his musical talent really shined....he and his students came in first place....not surprising....he was the ultimate true musician. Andy you are a wonderful human being and will be greatly missed.  I learned a great deal from you as one of the first high school graduation coaches hired with ECSD and I greatly appreciated your insights and help with the High School Graduation Program that you and Bill helped initiate in 2010.  Your sense of humor and your wisdom into helping us help students will not be forgotten. Rest in peace Andy. 

Mr. Herklotz was one of my most favorite teachers. I still think back fondly to Choral Music at lunch with him at AOB and singing at celebrations under his direction. He inspired me to have confidence in my voice and for that I will be eternally grateful. I have been a teacher for 18 years and he still inspires me to treat my students with love and respect. I will never forget the day that I found out he was color-blind. He came to school wearing different colored socks and when I asked him about it, he confessed that he decided to dress himself that morning (without the help of his wife) and that he obviously chose incorrectly. :) I will always remember him as a super-funny guy, full of life, and overflowing with a love of music. My deepest condolences on your loss.

Mr. Herklotz's band room was a refuge for me in highschool - one of the few places where I genuinely felt like one of the 'cool kids'. 

He often let us spend lunch-hour there, and occasionally jammed with us when the mood struck. That man had a lot of love to give - in fact, he gave to the point of becoming quite deaf in at least 1 ear! But he knew his students needed it. His patience, encouragement, and unjudgemental professionalism will be fondly remembered by many.

In later life, Mr. Herklotz started a second career as a financial adviser. While I wondered about his motivations at the time (musician going mainstream), I look back now and can, with no doubt, say that it must have been a way to continue helping people... without having to lose his hearing completely!  

Mr. Herklotz left the world a better place than he found it. We should all strive to do the same.

He saved me from getting some bad burns. I walked into band class after a smoke. He said " Nick your on fire" I was like "excuse me ? " Then he proceeded to smacking my back.  Low and behold my backpack was on fire . Thanks Mr Herklotz. Great teacher. Taught me basic drums

I spent a few years working with Andy at Austin O'Brien; he even had an office within the library where I worked.  He was always a kind, caring, fun, and hard-working staff member and a pleasure to have around.  I grieve that such a decent  man was taken so young and send my condolences to the family.

What a great loss, I am sorry to hear of the passing of such a great person and a gentle soul. May you rest easy friend. I will not forget our great chats and your great music. 

Mr. Herklotz taught me math and was also the music director for my first ever high school theatre performance, "Annie". There were a handful of teachers at Austin O'Brien that created the space for a student to thrive. Mr. Herklotz was one of them. I wouldn't have passed Math if it hadn't been for Mr. Herklotz teaching it to me using visuals and music-based math-learning. His death has made me reflect on the impact that good teachers have on their students. Memories of all my fine arts teachers ( music, visual art and drama) are being held close to my heart today. 

Twenty years later, I'm still performing as an actor, with training in music, and am opening a show this evening in Lethbridge and then touring it to Dublin. I am unable to be in Edmonton for the services, but I'll definitely be thinking of him as I walk on stage tonight.

Mr. Herklotz was a wonderful teacher and an incredibly kind person.  There was room for everyone in his band class, so long as you worked hard. It was on one of his band trips that I came to Vancouver for the first time and immediately knew it would be home for me.  I moved there 3 weeks after finishing my last course at university.  I credit him for always giving me a place to belong during some difficult teenage years, and for helping me discover the place where my heart feels at home.  May he rest in peace, he will always be remembered with love and respect. 

Mr. Herklotz was a man who got me to love music the way i do until this day. We were great friends. We didn't speak much since i moved to B.C.  I will always  have the memories from being in his band class to being in a jazz combo in which we toured all over Edmonton.  I will always remember the good times we all had together and he will be missed.  My condolences to the family. 

Mr. Herklotz taught me music and math at Austin O'Brien High School from 1996 to 1999.  Over the course of three years he helped me to discover who I wanted to be in the future. We had a bond right away with our common interests in classic rock and live performance. His many stories of playing in a band at clubs has helped me in so many ways as a performing musician, from knowing how to check the mic and tune up to having real expectations that no roadie is going to magically show up and carry your gear so to be prepared when buying gear that you can lift it. So many little things have stuck with me and I am so grateful I had such a caring teacher for music which has continued to be my greatest passion. Fond memories of his band class jokes and poking fun at his colour blindness. By grade 12, I was in Band, Stage Band, Jazz Combo and Math with Mr. Herklotz. I made more credits under his teachings than any other. The fact that I passed Math was only due to his kindness and willingness to give me a passing grade based on a promise that I will not just fall in to the three chord rock formula when I pursue my music career. It was real special when he hired my Brothers and I (The McGowan Family Band) to perform for him and a few other School staff members before I graduate. Under his encouragement I performed in various  bands at each of the battle of the bands that he helped put together for the School.  By the time I graduated, Mr. Herklotz was now my friend Andy. Last week my band celebrated our 20 Year Anniversary of performing live. Andy was in my thoughts at times during the celebration and I had not seen him for a few years and did not know of the diagnosis.  For many of the past twenty years I would volunteer at Edmonton Folk Music Festival where I would always get a chance to hang out with Andy at the afterparty. I am happy I had the chance to always lead off by saying he was my favourite teacher ever and how much I appreciate him being my mentor and friend. 

He taught music at AOB, I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher, I have such fond memories of band class, he was so fun, enthusiastic and caring. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing, he will be missed very much, my condolences to his family and friends, God Bless

We had a great gab fest and laughfest at Uncle Joe's funeral . Caught up on family matters and growing up .
Many happy memories were shared about your summer visits to the farm.
In person it was fun to embarrass you but in print,not so much.
BUT 'Indian toilets and fetching chickens' etc. will live on as fun and cherished memories.lol.

So very sorry to hear of Andrew's passing. Growing up, he was my cool cousin from Edmonton. I have numerous fond memories of summer holidays spent with him in Saskatchewan or in Edmonton. We shared numerous fun experiences and tried hard not to get into trouble.  Janet and I were delighted to have him as our best man at our wedding.

Mr Herklotz was an amazing person and teacher. I was in his band class at AOB. His class was one of the high lights of my high school years. He made it a safe place you could be yourself with no judgment. He inspired students to do their best, taught them to feed their passion for music and to take a risk to try some thing new. I am so sorry for his families loss and hope they find some comfort in knowing how many lives he touched with his kindness and passion for music.

Mr Herklotz was my band teacher in High School at AOB. He was really the best teacher anyone could hope for. I’m so sad to hear about his passing. He inspired so many young musicians and pushed us all to be our best! He will be greatly missed.
