Words cannot express the love I had working for Bert and Play It Again Sports. I applied to PIAS as it was close to my house and I loved all things sports. Bert hired me and I am so so grateful he did. Little did I know, how many incredible years I would spend with him and the wonderful people there. I made lifelong friends and met the amazing man who is now my husband. 

Bert had a wonderful, loving and caring personality and he will be so dearly missed.

Bert hired me to work at Play it Again Sports when I was 16. He was my first boss and I was lucky to work with him for nearly 10 years. 

It’s not an understatement to say that working at PIAS changed my life. It taught me about business and customer service. It taught me how to have pride and ownership in my work and how to be part of a team outside of sports. Most of all, I met some life long friends and even my future wife. 

Bert, more than anyone else, was responsible for all of that. He set a truly special culture and hired most of those wonderful people. He believed enough in me to give me increasing responsibility and as all of you know to have Bert believe in you means a lot.

I owe Bert a deep debt of gratitude for the impact he had on my life and I will miss him greatly.



My deepest condolences to Kelli and all of Bert’s family. Although it has been years, I can still see Bert’s infectious smile and hear him yell “Schurbert” every time I walked into Play It Again Sports to start my shift. Bert was my boss at Play It Again for over 6 years and I remember how amazing he was with people, his positive outlook, and gentle demeanor. He truly was a great man and I feel honored to have known and worked with him.  l will always have very fond memories of our time together. Cheers Bert ❤️

All the good memories with the Huckster. Starting from playing together on sports teams to riding dirt bikes & waterskiing at the lake.  He was a great roommate to have in the old Victoria days. I am still shocked and saddened! Too young  too soon for someone who has touched us all in such a positive light. His light will never go out in my memories.

You stepped on my hands in Grade 7 Assembly. You built a wicked ice fort in Grade 8. You hated my Boy George hat in our locker in Grade 9. You made new friends in Grade 10, but we always stayed connected. You were our Bouncer and Protector at the Greenhouse. You were my Chi Chi’s Buddy and I consumed way too many nachos with you. You moved away for a while and then one day surprised me at Smitty’s, and it was like old times. 
Your face and smile always lit the room up. Even 
married to other people, we kept our friendship and all took a trip to Cabo together. And I loved playing ball with you in our 30’s!
I will miss you my dear friend!!!!!!!!! 

Bert was a true renaissance man, way before that was a thing. I met Burt through Tim Lehnhoff.  We were usually up to no good… long hair, guitar playing guys, and doing lots of unsporting stuff. . Still he accepted us. Bert had friends everywhere, in every group. What a pleasure, an honour, to have counted him as one of my dear friends. I’ll miss him for the rest of my days. Rest in peace brother, and condolences to all the family and friends.

Where do I begin. My heart is ripped in two. I’m still processing this reality. I met Bert Hucke in Grade 10. Little did I know how important and intertwined he would be in my life. The common denominator I all my sports teams was aka Hucker,Huckster, and Hoooooka . From the Red wings, VG H.S. Football, and the Gator Men H..C  yet was always in my dressing room. 3 years of driving to late night practices and games with the Red wings  to hundreds of cold wet  football practice’s and our Gators pregame post game banter he was always there. My wife said it like all you have commented, that Bert could talk with his eyes and smile.  This is meant to make you all chuckle but I have spent more time in showers with Bert naked than some people have spent with him fully clothed lol omg. We rocked in his black Camareo to the Scorpions and the Outfield. Ok Burty here we go . One last time. Huddle up, on three # 34 sweep left. Run with it bro😂 . Love ya 

When I was 15 years old, my parents couldn’t afford to pay for me play club hockey and pay for all the expensive gear that I would need to play at a higher level. So I needed a job. I walked into Play it again sports that spring and was interviewed by Bert. I spent the next 5 years working for him and Will. Bert taught me many lessons that have served me well over the years. Bert gave me my first sense of responsibilities,  taught me how to sell, taught me how to buy, taught me how to fix things that are broken and taught me the value of a dollar. 

Most important he taught me to love what you do. And everyone who knows Bert knows he loves sports and sporting goods. I still vividly remember him sitting in the office  talking about the new hockey league year and the new gear he wanted to purchase. Custom TPS gloves, the Ryan smith specials. With a smile from ear to ear he said Matty there is no better job than being able to come to work in shorts and sneakers and talk sports all day.  I’m thankful to have spent so much time with him during my youth, and I want to give my deepest  condolences to the family.

Bert you will be deeply missed by anyone who had the privilege of knowing you.  Thank you for the great night's out, chats at the kitchen table, vacations spent together..so many memories to look back on and smile about.  Rest easy Hucke❤️

Bert was my manager at Play It Again Sports for six years in the 2000s. He hired me as a 19 year old kid starting university, and I left as a 25 year old man. What a great boss Bert was during those formative years. His passion for sports was infectious. We would chat Oilers and Blue Jays, sharpen skates,  gush over these new "One Piece" sticks that were coming out, and share laughs.  He'd come watch some of my junior hockey games, and I even subbed with for his Men's league team, The Gators, a few times. I learned a lot from Bert. My time working for him taught me a lot about basic business principles, but more than anything, he taught me that it's possible to carve out a living in the sports industry; which is where I still work today. 

My condolences to all of his family and friends. Bert was a great guy. He will be missed, but his influence will carry on.

Shocked and saddened by the news. I thank everyone for the great memories back in high school, where the Huckster was the center of attention wherever there was a crowd infectious Laugh Smile. I have so many memories of my friend Burt - we spent most of our high days playing football and hanging with all our friends - tge one story that I will share - Burt and I were going to Kelowna to play football- as we drove it got dark both Burt and I had never driven in the mountains we were both pretty scared so we stop at dead man's flats and got a room for the night - Burt was my friend someone who's company was infectious to me I'm so great full to have grown up with him and every time I think of him the smile on my face will never fade RIP hucker I love you man
