Colin is survived by his parents Laurent and Betty, his soulmate Shauna Chimko and her kids Rae-Lynn, R.J., and Brandon, his stepchildren Kiersten and Jordan, his brothers Justin (Emma) and Devin (Christa), his nephews Ethan, Zac, Liam, Daniel and Lewis, his niece Elise, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many great friends. He also leaves behind his furry, four legged friends Kya, Max and Abbey. Colin lived in Gibbons with Shauna and his second home was his shop in Edmonton where he worked many long days.
Colin was a kind man who forged many relationships over the years. The immediate thing people remember about Colin was his warm smile and how he could find a way to connect with anyone, talk about anything, and even make strangers feel comfortable. His friendships lasted a lifetime, and he valued the people that he let into his life. Or perhaps people and animals is more accurate. Colin had a fondness of animals from an early age, his first cat at age 6, he then provided a loving home for many more cats and dogs over the years.
Colin liked to blaze his own trail in life. He loved the freedom of the outdoors and was happiest when he was camping and sitting by a fire. He lived by this same freedom in his career, where his attributes of having an entrepreneurial mind and not being scared of hard work, allowed him to own and operate his own business.
He ran his business, After Hours Metal Polishing, for the past twenty-three years. He provided a livelihood for many people while also delivering a product that was second to none. Colin was proud to turn things that were old and worn to the shiny and new. He took great satisfaction in watching his customer’s reactions, knowing how happy they always were with his work.
As great as he was in his craft, Colin was humble. He did not like the spotlight and certainly did not want attention surrounding the medical issues he was challenged with. He would often make jokes and be upbeat with medical staff, referring to his little kidney problem while suffering total kidney failure. It was his way of caring about others more than himself. Colin would not dwell on things, often saying it is what it is, being realistic and knowing that there is only so much one can do.
Colin’s departure leaves a hole in everyone’s heart, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Still, he lived a full life, took many opportunities to vacation with friends and family, enjoyed watching hockey and soccer games of his kids and nephews, and would always be available for cards or to play a boardgame. He knew he wouldn’t be alive forever and took every opportunity to be with those he loved. Colin would often say that tragedy plus time equals humor, and I know he would want everyone to remember the good times.
The family wishes to thank the staff in the ICU at the University of Alberta hospital and is grateful to all who have reached out during this difficult time.
