The family of Doris Hayden is deeply saddened to announce that she passed away at the age of 92 on October 9, 2023. She was born on July 31, 1931 in Garson, Manitoba to Andrew and Annie Horosko. In 1964, she married Stanley Hayden in Winnipeg. They subsequently moved to Edmonton and later St. Albert where they raised their family. Doris considered St. Albert to be her home and community. She lived there until 2019 when she relocated to a care home in Morinville.
Doris earned two Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of Manitoba: in Science and Education. She had a career as a teacher of math and sciences, along with subjects as varied as French, physical education, and industrial arts. She taught in a number of communities in Manitoba, including serving as the principal of one and two-room high schools. She also worked as a supervisor for the Alberta Department of Education and as a teacher for both St. Albert school districts. Later in her career, she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Religious Education at Newman Theological College.
Doris was devoted to her Catholic faith. She was a parishioner of both St. Basil’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Edmonton and Holy Family Parish in St. Albert. Her Ukrainian roots were also important to her and she maintained a connection with the Ukrainian community. One of her favourite activities was preparing traditional dishes for special occasions, such as 12-course meals for Christmas Eve and large intricate Easter baskets including Ukrainian Easter eggs that she would paint with her children. In her later years, even as she struggled with dementia, she enjoyed doing Ukrainian language lessons that rekindled her memory of the language.
She was active in the community as a volunteer with groups including the St. Albert Interfaith Caring Council and as a board member of the Stop Abuse in Families (SAIF) Society. Doris had a love of gardening and animals (especially her pets) and had a flair for fashion (she perfected the Jackie Kennedy look in the 1960s). She will be fondly remembered for her kindness and generosity.
Doris is survived by her children Michele, Marisa, and Anders (Fran), grandson Thomas, sister Mary, and nieces Norma and Lisa and their families. She is predeceased by her husband Stanley, parents Andrew and Annie, sister Sophie, and brothers John and Nick.
A Funeral Service will be held at Memories Funeral Home on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 1:00 PM with interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.memoriesfuneral.com for the Hayden family.
