

Douglas was born in Yorkshire, England. He enlisted in the Royal Navy, Fleet Arm Division in 1939, at the age of 18 prior to WWII. He served on the Carrier H.M.S. Avenger on Russian convoys with Squadron 252. On return, he boarded H.M.S. Courageous chasing the Bismarck, with the squadron getting the first hit with a torpedo. He served on the H.M.S. Ark Royal and was a survivor of the Malta Convoys. He served in the Far East in India and Ceylon. His rank upon discharge was Petty Officer. Douglas was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 66. He was Chairman of the Honours and Awards committee and Poppy Campaign; Air Cadet Chairman and 1st Vice President. He received the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Service to the Legion and communities of Ponoka and Maskwacis.
Douglas was deeply involved in soccer. For many years in the 70/80’s he was Mr. Soccer in Red Deer. Doug was the coach of the U-14 team representing the Central Alberta Zone at the Alberta Summer Games in Calgary in 1974. He refereed until he was 65 and was an active participant in Annual Friendly Membership soccer game into his 70’s.
Douglas was respected and loved by many in the ASA and at the age of 74 he was deservedly inducted as a Life member. As the oldest living life member, he was known as “Dad”, the perfect gentleman who could be quite vociferous if tradition was challenged. Douglas’ absence will be duly felt by the ASA.
Douglas is survived by his two daughters, Wendy Redding and Wanda Plumpton and his son Doug.
Funeral Services will be held at Hainstock’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, 9810-34 Ave. Edmonton, AB at 11 am on Monday, July 19, 2021.
