It was my great pleasure to of known and cared for Doug!  I will always remember his sense of humor and his great smile, He will be greatly missed. My condolences to the family!

Uncle Doug was the best uncle in the world...not my uncle by blood, but by love. He was my Dad's best friend. They roomed together at St Stephen's and  graduated together with BSc Ag degrees. They spent at least one summer together working on the Shearer farm. Daddy became a soils scientist in Lacombe: Doug became an oilman. The family home was in Edmonton, but Doug's job meant he was on the road. If you ask Carolyn, she'll tell you that her Dad spent as much time with the Walker kids as the Shearer kids because our home was his home away from home. Our back door was unlocked and there was a guest bed with his name on the pillow. I loved getting up and finding Uncle Doug and Daddy in the kitchen, making breakfast and telling tall tales. Doug and Daddy both played a mean game of bridge...or rather, they both played a mean game of bluff. I was probably around 8 years old when they decided to make me the fourth at the bridge table. I fell in love with the game but years later I realized it was due to experiencing the love of a true friendship. Doug had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humour, a wonderful personality and always had a twinkle in his eye.  Auntie Barb was his perfect partner - rational, sensible and patient.....just like my Mom, which is not surprising, because Daddy & Doug were two peas in a pod. They were best buddies. From them, I learned about true friendship, unconditional love and compassion for all and everything. I learned that if you want to be a great gardener, you've got to start with great soil. We discussed compost like others discuss fine wines. From them, I learned to treat everyone as an equal, whether rich or poor, young or old, sick or healthy, man or woman, prince or pauper. And I learned how to play a quality, strategic, cunning, game of bridge. Daddy died suddenly in 1981 and when Doug & Barb moved to the coast, I was ecstatic. When I was around Uncle Doug, it felt like Daddy was with us, once again...and I know Doug felt the same. One time, when Doug and Barb came to Mom's home in Victoria for lunch, Doug offered to set the table.  It was only when we sat down that we realized he had...by habit...laid an extra setting for Daddy. Daddy had been dead for almost twenty years, yet, his spirit was large as life when Uncle Doug was around. Uncle Doug was blessed to marry the love of his life and the captain of the ship, Auntie Barb. I admired them: They had it all.  They lived life to the fullest and seized every moment. They were blessed with spirits of adventure and brave souls: They set foot on every continent and absorbed the wonders of the world. From blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos to strange eats in crowded Asian markets, Doug and Barb trekked and returned with energies that defied people 20 years their junior. I loved hearing their stories, but mostly, I loved that the two of them could travel and enjoy adventures - together. Over 61 years together and they made every minute count. Doug was one of the finest gardeners I've known - a man who loved getting his hands dirty.  He received many awards, but it wasn't the trophies that got him excited .... it was his kids and his grandkids and his compost and his dinner-plate-sized, ant-free dahlias and softball-sized sweet onions. He loved his family - all of us - and we loved him. He was a wonderful, true friend and he was the best uncle in the world. God bless you Uncle Doug. I'll love you forever and you will always be in my heart. Now that Daddy has his favourite bridge partner back at the table, I know you two will "skunk" the best of them! Hearing of Doug's passing has saddened our hearts. He was always a very kind person. Even he was in pain he never complained. You were such an inspiration to me and my family. You were more than a boss. You were like a father to me and my husband. You and Barb, guided us when we were starting our life here in Canada. You taught us to balance our work and family. You taught me to be more patience, loving, caring and to be more compassionate. Thank you so much for everything. You and Barb really touch our lives. Now fly with the angels in heaven. We love you Doug and surely; we will miss you! Rest in heaven. Our prayers are with you and your family. However, rejoice knowing that he is sitting at the feet of Jesus with eternal life.
