OBITUARY

Dr. James Howe Chin

24 July , 19777 September , 2019

With profound sorrow we mourn the sudden passing of Dr. James Howe Chin in the early morning of September 7th, 2019. James suffered a massive heart attack at home caused by undiagnosed coronary artery disease. He is survived by his loving mother, Mrs. Betty Chin, his doting sister Jennifer Chin, his soul mate and wife Dr. Haili Wang, his two wonderful children Sophia Chin and Ethan Chin. He also left behind his parents-in-law, Huizhen Ren and Zhenwu Wang, sister-in-law Amanda Wang (Li Xu) and nephew Nicholas Xu. James is also lovingly remembered by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and an extended network of friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by his father Maxwell Chin, his grandparents, aunt and uncle.

James was born and raised in Vancouver where he completed highschool and a Bachelor of Sciences Honors in Physiology at the University of British Columbia. He moved to Edmonton in 1999 to pursue a very rigorous combined MD/PhD program and has been calling Edmonton home since. He successfully defended his PhD thesis under the guidance of Dr. Jack Jhamandas in 2006, and completed his MD degree in 2007. He then pursued a residency in Anesthesia and started practicing at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton until his untimely passing. He was very well respected and well loved by colleagues and patients alike.

James loved reading, cooking, smoking meats, great food, a wide range of music, photography, weight lifting, travelling, watching sports and most of all, watching Sophia conquering the swimming pool.

Despite all that he has accomplished in the academic realm or in the operating room, James’ truest pride and joy was his family. Together James, Haili, Sophia and Ethan have travelled to many countries with their extended families, spent hours at the swimming pool cheering for Sophia, enjoyed numerous bike trips through the river valley and walks around their neighborhood. James was the best father to Sophia and Ethan, a devoted and loving husband to Haili.

A celebration of James’ life will be held on Saturday September 14th, 2019 at Hainstock Funeral Home and Crematorium at 10 AM. Reception to follow from 11 AM until 1 PM. The casket will remain in the main chapel for visiting during this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that donations be made in memory of James to KidSport Canada (http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/donate/) or Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation (https://www.royalalex.org/ways-to-give/memory-gift-remembrance/).

Dear Haili,
My deepest condolences to you and your children, Sophia and Ethan. I remember James as a junior resident on 3C4 at UAH. James was such a kind soul. He was an amazing colleague, and a genuine kind man, always willing to give a helping hand. We were on rotation together as residents when I heard the news of my FIL passing. He was so genuine and kind to me and I will never forget how supportive he was.
As staff physicians in the bronch suite, we would often talk about family life. He was so proud of you Haili and your kids and it just radiated from him when he talked about you all. He would give me tips on how to get our son to enjoy the water as well when we were struggling with swimming lessons which was so appreciated.
Haili and kids - We are so sorry for your tragic loss. You will be in our prayers. James will be so missed.
Love, Ashley Gillson and Peter Kwan

My prayers are with families and friends of Dr. James Chin. Dr. Chin would always politely greet me. He was respectful and polite. I still cannot believe he is no longer here, since it was only last week as he passed by Starbucks where I work, we chatted as usual. Dr. Chin you will be forever in our hearts, sleep in peace.

I am so very sorry to hear of James’ passing. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I only knew him for a short time but he always struck me as exceptionally decent and kind. Although he was shy and unassuming in medical school there were always flashes of his sparkling personality he was hiding underneath. What I remember the most were the basketball games in the pulse. Every game there were a few moments where James competitive streak really shone through. It’s funny thinking about it now, how he would just turn into a little bit of Kobe on the court. Low key Mamba. I love that. It made playing basketball so much fun.

Whatever’s next. Wherever we go after this. I think people like James stick with us for a long time.

Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow for Haili, Sophia and Ethan on the loss of James. I was James’ research supervisor during his PhD studies and undertook the task of academic parenting that was filled with joy and pride at overseeing the academic development of such a gifted individual as James - highly intelligent, motivated and completely committed to the pursuit of knowledge and discovery. More importantly, James exuded humanism, integrity, selflessness and compassion that any parent would love to see in their children. These and many other attributes would serve him well as he embarked upon a highly successful medical career. Along the way he and Haili got married, which our entire laboratory staff were privileged to attend, and started a family. We kept in touch and I marveled at the love and dedication he had for his wife and two children, Sophia and Ethan who brought him unbridled joy. The news of James’ passing was a profound shock to me and my family who knew James when he was my PhD student. For me the grief lingers akin to having lost a son too early in life. I will always cherish his memory and the profound gift of love and caring that he has left us with. Love to you, Haili, and the children from us all.
