Frederic “Doug” Omand passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026, surrounded by his beloved family.
Doug was a man of quiet curiosity and patience. An avid reader, he was always interested in the world around him and could often be found with a good book or newspaper in hand. He approached life with a thoughtful nature and an open mind, always curious and ready to learn something new. He could carry conversations on topics ranging from politics to heavy metal, astronomy to naval aircraft and world history.
In his younger years, Doug was a member of the Edmonton Auto Racing Association, proudly driving late model car #13. His love of racing stayed with him throughout his life. He was a faithful NASCAR fan, rarely missing a Sunday race. Racing remained one of the things that brought him great enjoyment and gave him something to look forward to each week. In his youth, a fond memory for Doug was attending the World Scout Jamboree in Eastern Canada.
Doug also had a wonderful knack for tinkering. He loved puttering in his garage, and he took great pride in keeping it unorganized. His tools, treasures, and collection of little trinkets all had their place, and there was always something to sort, fix, build, or simply fiddle with. His most endearing tool was an HB pencil whittled down to half size and capped off with a better eraser than it came with.
In 2002, Doug retired his "R2" call sign after more than 30 years of dedicated service at the University of Alberta. Retirement brought him the freedom to enjoy the things he loved most. He travelled, spent many happy days at the trailer near Pigeon Lake with a Lemon Hart & Coke in hand, taking all day to read the newspaper and, above all, treasured time with his family and grandchildren.
Doug will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Kathleen; his daughter Jennifer and son-in-law Bryan; his son Daniel and daughter-in-law Kerri; and his cherished grandchildren, Charlie, James, Jack, and Frances. He is also survived by his brother Wayne (Carol). He will be deeply missed by numerous extended family members and close friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Ted and Madeline.
Doug’s gentle nature, patience, curiosity, and love for his family will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. He adored his children and grandchildren with limitless affection. His family takes comfort in knowing that he spent his final moments surrounded by those he loved most. Nothing mattered more to Doug than his family.
The family wishes to thank the many caring and compassionate healthcare workers involved in Doug's care; especially both the home and palliative care teams at the South East Home Care Division.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Doug to Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCARS).
