Harvey was born in Edmonton, the fourth child of Fred and Tena (Belozer) Popik. His childhood years consisted of school and sports. Harvey spent much time shadowing his “big brother” Bob to hockey practices and baseball games at Renfrew Stadium. As a teenager, he was in high demand by baseball teams in the Alberta and Saskatchewan circuits. Harv spent his university years at BYU in Utah getting a BSc in Business. He had several careers over the years working at The Bay, AGT (Telus), the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Public School Board, small town business administrator, and lastly as a contracted consultant for PeopleSoft (Oracle) computer systems. Being a great conversationalist, he looked up everything he could find on his favourite topics…….sports, world economy, local and global real estate and PeopleSoft systems to name a few. In 1968 Harvey met Maureen and they were married in 1969. Joanna, Heather, and Michael arrived and he became a hockey/soccer Dad, but never lost his deep love of sports. Harvey was an avid Oilers fan and spent many evenings at Oiler Games with son-in-law Al. He also could not let a Blue Jays game go by without watching it. AND…Chuba Hubbard was one of Harv’s Canadian sports heroes. Harv was so proud of his family……the way his children faced and handled adversity; the way his grandchildren are so caring and are becoming productive adults; the way his great-grandson had become the apple of his eye. In his neighbourhood, Harvey was known for his superb lawn, his smile, and his big wave. He was always first to welcome new families to the neighborhood and be ready for a chat. Some called him the ambassador of the crescent. Harvey passed away unexpectedly and peacefully surrounded by family at the Sturgeon Community Hospital. He is survived by Maureen (McHale) his wife of over 56 years; children, Joanna (Al) Yariwon, Heather, Michael (Karen Hillman); grandchildren, AJ, Haley, and Josie Yariwon, Keenan (Chantal Cheshire) Clarke-Popik, Sydney Hillman; great-grandson, Anakin Clarke-Popik; grand fur-baby, Mickie. Also missing Harvey will be brother, Robert (Lorraine) and family, as well as brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Harvey was one of a kind!
