Herb was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 1, 1929, the oldest of 7 children. He married Loraine Verheire on December 16, 1950. His first full-time job was with Vets Sheet Metal where he worked for 15 years. Leaving Vets, Herb moved his family to Edson where he purchased and managed the Marshall Wells Hardware store for almost two years. When the opportunity presented itself, Herb decided to move the family back to Edmonton in 1967 where he went to work at the Edmonton Public School Board as a sheet metal worker until 1989, when he retired.
In his free time Herb enjoyed rock polishing, making jewelry and helping Lori with her various tole painting projects. Herb and Loraine really enjoyed traveling. They especially liked going to Hawaii and later in life, snow birding with their motor home to Yuma, Arizona for the winters. They relocated from their house in Malmo to their condo in 2005 where they both plugged into numerous social activities. In his later years Herb enjoyed having a scooter to get around on, and he particularly loved going to the nearby McDonalds to have coffee and a cranberry muffin with his friends and family.
Herb was predeceased by his wife Loraine in 2019, his son Gary in 2022, and his brothers Walter and Lawrence, his sister Janet, and both his parents, Rudolf and Bertha.
Herb is survived by his son Wayne (Tannis), daughter Diane Claassen (Paul), and daughter-in-law Wendy. He had the great pleasure of seeing all 7 of his grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren begin their lives and grow up in their respective homes over the years. Herb is survived by his brothers Allan (Judy), Eric (Glady), and Harold (Donna) and sister-in-laws Gladys (Walt) and Ruth (Lawrence).
Herb passed away quietly in his sleep on March 2, 2026.
