Devoted to his immediate and extended family, Jayant is survived by his wife, Urmila (Umi), his daughter Neelam (Raj), and his son Shetal (Jaimini); his grandchildren Aishani, Khyan, Aadi, and Shaan; his siblings Niruben (Harish), Jashumati (d. Bhagu), Dinesh (Bhanu), Bharat (Ramila), Jagdish (Shakuntala) and his 11 nephews and nieces including Mehul (Sheral) and Rooshil.
He is predeceased by his parents, Govindji and Bhuliben Patel.
Jayant was born on November 2, 1946 in Navsari, India. He grew up working along side his father and siblings on the family farm in Pardi, India.
He graduated, as the first from his village and his family, with a Bachelor of Science (First Class Honors) from Gujarat University in 1968 and Detroit institute of Technology in 1971.
Jayant moved to Scarborough, Ontario in 1972. In 1974, he married Umi in Zimbabwe. Jayant’s first born, Neelam arrived in 1976 and four years later Shetal was born.
In 1980, Jayant and family moved to Wetaskiwin, Alberta where he managed Granpac Ltd. until 2001.
After his children completed post-secondary, Jayant and family moved to Edmonton in 2001; retiring in 2007.
In 2009, his first grandchild, Aishani was born followed by Khyan (2014), Aadi (2015), and Shaan (2018).
Through his life and in retirement, he loved being outdoors, studying religion, and tracking politics. His hobbies included gardening, cycling, and most especially spending time with grandchildren. For whom he matured mangoes, played games, and taking to and from daycare and school in his “little green bus”.
He will be missed by extended family and friends from around the world.
