My condolences to the family in this difficult time. Major Binns gave A-Coy some of the most demanding and memorable training during his time at the helm. Nobody remembers the easy days, we all remember being on EX with Mr. Binns. His passion to build a ready infantry company will not be forgotten. We paid it forward as best we could, Sir.

I don't know where to start as there are so many...classics. None that I feel comfortable sharing here in public. That's not to infer that Jack was ever naughty....he just had a lot of friends who were true "characters" where he acted as the anchor or the eye of the storm. I'm looking forward to sharing many of these tales at the post-service reception....

The Old Guard Remembers

While going through our vintage 'Regina Rifles' files, we found this old B&W photo from Exercise Pacific Slam, taken back in the early 80's in British Columbia . Jack can be seen in the upper right-hand corner.

Integrity, discipline, loyalty, self confidence, ambition, drive, and tenacity, Jack had the traits of good military leadership, which reflected in the high quality of his soldiers under his command.

To sum things up, here is a quote from one of his soldiers who had heard of Jack's passing "Jack was the Course Officer for my Battle School, and Machine Gun Course. He was one tough dude".

Jack, you've left an indelible mark in many lives over many decades. Stand easy, you're duty is done.

I remember John as a young officer in the RRR and also ran in to him on occasion when were both serving with the PPCLI. John was an intense leader and person brining out the best in his soldiers. It's with great sadness that he has passed on. RIP John.

I had known Jack since his RRR days back in the 70's, and later, when he served in other Regiments and the RCMP through out the years. Amazingly, I ran into him in all places, Baghdad's Palace District of Al Karhk in Iraq, back in October of 2006 while I was serving in the Australian Army.

After catching up, and having a Pepsi in a 'questionable' establishment, and I took this photo of him before we parted ways.

Although I had lost touch the past decade or so, I'll miss him.

RIP Jack.

Up The Johns!
